DNF Round Up

I can’t believe I’m actually writing this. I honestly am shocked that I’ve DNFed enough books in recent weeks to even write a DNF round up. It’s shameful. For those of you who don’t know, DNF means Did Not Finish. For whatever reason, there was just something about the book in question that made me put it down, and decided not to go on. I usually don’t do this very often, but I’ve just run into a few books that really didn’t do it for me.

I’m pretty sure one of these books is going to get me murdered in my sleep..

a history of glitter and blood

In the nicest and most respectful way possible, this book was one of the biggest hot messes that I have ever come across in my reading career. The writing was just awful, and I had absolutely no idea what was going on at any point in the book. Also, I consider myself to be a fairly vulgar person. I swear. A lot. However, there is absolutely no need for a YA book to have the word “fuck” two or three times on every page. Add in some strange prostitution and fairy eating storylines, and the whole thing just didn’t work for me.

This was another case of a writing style that I just couldn’t make myself enjoy. The author tried to use seventeenth (or eighteenth?) century dialogue, but he wasn’t consistent with it. This made the whole thing feel a little choppy and just uneven. I also couldn’t connect with any of the characters. They were all quite nondescript and one dimensional. Reading this book started to feel like a chore, so I had to put it down.

ps i still love you

GUYS PLEASE DON’T KILL ME. I’m sorry! I tried! I just couldn’t. I have no idea why I even tried to read this. I didn’t like the first book. Lara Jean’s narrative was just too childish for me, and I couldn’t take it. Nothing has changed in this next book. I think I only picked it up to see if she had matured any, and I was quite disappointed.

  1. ” One Of The Biggest Hot Messes ” I am cracking up right now! Girl don’t feel bad at all, I’ve read 11 books in a row that were crappy and 5 of those were DNF’s. I’m at the point in my blogging career where I don’t have patience for anything mediocre! I haven’t been able to pick up P.S I Still Love You, but I’ve heard amazing things about it, so sorry it was a disappointment for you!

    1. That book was literally the definition of hot mess. Lol. With PS I Still Love You, I think if you liked the first book, you’ll enjoy it. Lara Jean’s character just drove me freaking crazy, so I couldn’t do it.

  2. You’ve made me wary about reading PS I Still Love You. I also didn’t like the first book and I’ve been putting off reading this one in case I don’t like it either. So many people have loved it, though. Maybe I’ll put off reading PS I Still Love You a bit longer.

    1. Yeah.. I know a lot of people really enjoyed it, but unfortunately, I just couldn’t. It’s such a cute story, but I just didn’t like Lara Jean. I didn’t want to burn myself out by forcing myself through a book that I didn’t like. I had to settle with being the unpopular opinion. Lol.

  3. I enjoyed to All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, but I do get your point on Laura Jean’s narrations being childish! I was hoping she would mature a little in the next book but I guess I’m going to have to read it and see for myself! I loved this post and DONT FEEL BAD we all have a huge list of DNFed! -M xo

    1. For whatever reason, her narrations were just a turn off for me. 😦 it was such a cute story, but I just couldn’t. And I feel so guilty when I DNF, especially review copies. I should probably get over that! Lol.

  4. Oh god I’m really scared about reading P.S I Still Love You now. I know that you didn’t like the book and that we shared similar opinions on it. And I think that after hearing all the hype about how good it was, I was genuinely hoping that I’d enjoy it. But this has brought me back down to reality to realize that I might not like it. Eek!

  5. I am so disappointed to hear about A history of glitter and blood. It was one book I was really looking forward too. Sorry you’ve had so many books lately that haven’t grabbed you, it’s awful when that happens. Hope you get a good one soon.
