Title: The Ruins

Genre: YA Dystopian Romance

Number of Pages: 315

My Rating: 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review.

Heartbroken, grief-stricken, and wracked with guilt, seventeen-year-old Evan Taylor returned to the Union, leaving behind the boy she loved.

Now, she and her friends must find a way to do the impossible – warn the citizens of the Union about an impending rebel attack without alerting the government and risking retaliation against her friends in the Ruins.

When every move Evan makes is thwarted, it soon becomes clear she’s being watched. Faced with a daily fight to stay one step ahead of her pursuers, she returns to the Ruins. But life in the Ruins has its own dangers, and soon she’s fighting a different battle – to stay alive long enough to discover the truth.

Since The Ruins is the sequel to The Union (check out my review here), I’m going to be a little intentionally vague so I don’t spoil anything.

The Ruins was a five star follow up to a five star book. It lived up to the high expectations that I had from reading The Union, and then some. This installment of The Union Series was packed with action and suspense, not to mention some steamy romance. I actually was a beta reader for this book, so I was pretty familiar with the story before I received an ARC. This book was so good that I still was on edge, worrying about the characters and their well being. The twists and turns still took me on a fast paced ride, and the romance still made me swoon over and over again.

Evan’s voice is so authentic, especially for a teenaged girl. It’s a very enjoyable experience to be inside her head. Evan has changed quite a bit from the girl she was at the beginning of The Union, and it shows. Her edges are a little more rough, and she’s matured at a rapid rate after what she went through. That character development continues to happen throughout The Ruins, and you see Evan discovering that’s she’s even more brave and daring then she thought. You start to see Evan really becoming more comfortable in her own skin, and being able to make her own choices. The poor girl has the weight of the world on her shoulders, and she carries it well. Hey, her decisions might not always be the smartest, but she’s always loyal to her friends and family, and will stop at nothing to protect them.

Overall, The Ruins is a solid followup to The Union. It was so great to be back in this world, and I’m eager to continue on with this series when the next book comes out. I definitely urge you to pick up a copy here (Amazon/Kindle). This is 100% a five star read.

When not visiting the imaginary worlds inside my head, I live in San Diego, California, with one husband, three children, two cats, and one dog. In addition to my day job as a technical writer and editor, I write young adult fiction. I love the intensity of teen emotions and the way they’re still figuring out life.

When I’m not writing, you can find me with my nose in a book, hanging out with family and friends, hiking, or knitting. I’m obsessed with Facebook, young adult novels, bad lip reading videos, pumpkin spice lattes, microbrewed beers, and the San Diego Chargers.
