Being The Literary Black Sheep: Part Two

In Part One of this mini-series, I talked about books that I dislike that it seems like everybody loves, making me the “black sheep” of the bookish community. While writing that post, I had an epiphany: being the black sheep works both ways. There are certainly some books that I actually like that are generally disliked in the bookish community. These books become “guilty pleasures” due to the general distaste that’s out there.

My motivations for this post are pretty much the same as my first post: I want to find a kindred spirit. I know there are others out there that enjoy some of these books. A quick disclaimer before I start my list: I don’t judge people on what they like to read, so please don’t judge me. šŸ™‚ With that said, here are some books that I like that have a generally negative opinion:

1.) The Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer

twilight-saga

I think the Twilight Saga is a series that a lot of people actually enjoy, but they won’t admit it. I’ve found that a lot of the people who dislike the series haven’t even read it. If you’ve read it and disliked it, that’s just fine. However, it’s a huge pet peeve of mine when people who haven’t even read a book automatically form a negative opinion on it. There are some exceptions to this, like if the author has been involved in something you don’t personally agree with, but I just dislike uninformed judgments in general.

2.) The Hush, Hush Series by Becca Fitzpatrick

hush hush series

I actually LIKE alpha male characters from time to time. I know a lot of people don’t like Patch because he’s very much an alpha male, but it just doesn’t bother me all that much.

3.) The Caster Chronicles by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

caster chronicles

I’m not really sure why people dislike this series so much. It seems like one of those “love it or hate it” kind of things. I know a lot of people have issues with how the South is depicted, and also don’t like Lena and Ethan.

4.) The Fallen Series by Lauren Kate

fallen

I think people have issues with the characters here. Once again, I can see where they’re coming from, but I don’t dislike (most) of the characters myself.

5.) Compulsion by Martina Boone

compulsion

This is yet another case where a lot of people dislike the characters, and I like them.

Well. This post certainly was a display of how certain characters can come off different ways to different people. Like I said at the top, different people like different things, and I think that’s a great thing.

So, did I succeed in my quest? Do any of my readers like any of these books? Also, is anyone this type of black sheep? Which books/series landed you in this category?

  1. Out of those, I’ve only heard of Fallen and Twilight – the first, I read up on and wasn’t interested, the second, pretty much the same but I’ve gotten “why not?” comments from people about Twilight…guilty pleasures can be fun, though! I’m not sure what mine are, probably just re-reading Harry Potter.

  2. I’m often the black sheep when it comes to all kinds of books, too. So I definitely won’t judge. šŸ˜‰

I read the first two Twilight books, and I thought they were okay. I really enjoyed the movies, though, and the hell with it to people who judge me for it.

Okay, so… I don’t like Hush, Hush, BUT it’s because of Nora and not too much because of Patch. x)

I LOVE the Caster Chronicles series (but the spin-off not so much). Lena and Ethan will always have a special place in my heart.

I read the first three Fallen books and I enjoyed them (book three made me bawl my eyes out), and when people say that they hate this series, I totally understand, but I won’t say that I hated it because I didn’t.

I haven’t read Compulsion yet, but I’m curious about it.

    1. Compulsion was good. It wasn’t what I was expecting, but it was definitely interesting. The storyline took a different direction then what I figured it would, but I guess that’s good. I can see where you wouldn’t like Nora. A lot of times, I totally understand where people are coming from, but for whatever reason the certain elements or characters that are a deal breaker for some people just aren’t for me.

  3. I’m not much into YA so haven’t heard of most of these. I liked Twilight through first 2 books and then when the 3rd went full blown love triangle it lost me. That said, I agree you should actually read the book before criticizing. And why not advocate for something you love instead of spending energy tearing apart what other people love. It’s like all the Frozen haters. I just want to yell at them and say “why do you care that we like it? Move on to something you like”
