Being The Literary Black Sheep: Part Two

In Part One of this mini-series, I talked about books that I dislike that it seems like everybody loves, making me the “black sheep” of the bookish community. While writing that post, I had an epiphany: being the black sheep works both ways. There are certainly some books that I actually like that are generally disliked in the bookish community. These books become “guilty pleasures” due to the general distaste that’s out there.

My motivations for this post are pretty much the same as my first post: I want to find a kindred spirit. I know there are others out there that enjoy some of these books. A quick disclaimer before I start my list: I don’t judge people on what they like to read, so please don’t judge me. 🙂 With that said, here are some books that I like that have a generally negative opinion:

1.) The Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyer

I think the Twilight Saga is a series that a lot of people actually enjoy, but they won’t admit it. I’ve found that a lot of the people who dislike the series haven’t even read it. If you’ve read it and disliked it, that’s just fine. However, it’s a huge pet peeve of mine when people who haven’t even read a book automatically form a negative opinion on it. There are some exceptions to this, like if the author has been involved in something you don’t personally agree with, but I just dislike uninformed judgments in general.

2.) The Hush, Hush Series by Becca Fitzpatrick

I actually LIKE alpha male characters from time to time. I know a lot of people don’t like Patch because he’s very much an alpha male, but it just doesn’t bother me all that much.

3.) The Caster Chronicles by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

I’m not really sure why people dislike this series so much. It seems like one of those “love it or hate it” kind of things. I know a lot of people have issues with how the South is depicted, and also don’t like Lena and Ethan.

4.) The Fallen Series by Lauren Kate

I think people have issues with the characters here. Once again, I can see where they’re coming from, but I don’t dislike (most) of the characters myself.

5.) Compulsion by Martina Boone

This is yet another case where a lot of people dislike the characters, and I like them.

Well. This post certainly was a display of how certain characters can come off different ways to different people. Like I said at the top, different people like different things, and I think that’s a great thing.
